"AndraeGonzaloThanksYou.com" engages technological and internet systems as a means of examining the validity and sincerity of virtual intimacy. It addresses the Internet’s erosion of social graces, and the allure of instant fame in our culture. In this ongoing performance installation I re-purpose standardized blog templates, and web-based social networking sites to create a catalogue of thanks messages, in place of hand-written notes. Central to the piece is a stark blog at http://www.andraegonzalothanksyou.com. There, the messages are listed chronologically, detailed by subject. Thanks recipients are categorized by relationship, and if possible notified of their inclusion on the site, through customized minicards that are printed by http://www.moo.com. The piece makes generous use of the internet, simultaneously elevating the value of giving thanks through digital permanence, but also illuminating the impersonal nature of virtual social exchanges. It also reflects the democratization of celebrity, by satirizing the awards speeches given during globally televised events like the academy awards.
